Today we had a blizard on Gambell. I didn’t even venture out from the lodge. Caught the 4:00 PM flight back to Nome where I will search for McKay’s Buntings tomorrow.
Unfortunately, the finch appears to be a Purple Finch (only the 3rd Bering Sea record). But it was exciting being on the island so late in the season. Will report tomorrow.
Hah! So the finch was technically a regionally rarer sight than the dove?? No kidding…
Hello,
My son and I are following your blog. We want to wish you the best of luck and hope that you achieve your goals. My son is completely infatuated by birding. When he was in 3rd grade his Science project was to study what birds came to which feeders and different foods. He also wants me to tell you that he started his own Big Year last weekend and is up to 20 different birds. It’s a great start for a 10 year old!
Hi John,
Just found your blog – Love it! I’m doing a Big Year too, but limited to Washington, DC. This has been an exhaustive blast; I can’t imagine what it would be like doing the whole country.
Keep it up, only 10 weeks to go and then we can all rest!

Hi Jason,
213 seems pretty respectable for D.C. only! Great job.
Dave,
Who writes your lines for you? Jon Dunn and Paul Lehman?

Joanne,
Awesome!
