Miscellaneous Items

Tomorrow morning I fly to Tucson for six days of birding in Southeast Arizona.  This along with Alaska remains one of the only areas of North America where it’s still possible to rack-up some impressive numbers of year-birds.  I’ll comment much more tomorrow on strategy and target birds.  I received these photos from Denise Shields of the Yellow Rail Walk at Anauhuac NWR on April 23.  This was immediately  after finding a single Yellow Rail.  Bill and I “High Fived” out of jubilation.

I’ll be back at least once more to Texas.  A June trip to try for Hook-billed Kites, Yellow-greened Vireo and Masked Duck.

  1. Awesome photos to celebrate the rail! Good luck in Arizona.

Wait, everybody is looking down at something (except the two 6’4 birders…) …..is it possible that you got THAT close a good look of a yellow rail?

    Thanks for sharing!

  3. John Vanderpoel says:

Yes, Laurent. We actually were this close to a Yellow Rail. In fact it flew up into a ladies hands before flying off (when I photographed it)!
