Got off the plane to San Diego at 8:0 AM and we were birding the San Diego R. mouth by 9:30 AM. We missed the Eurasian Widgeon but enjoyed the warm sun and added plenty of new year birds. Thanks to Guy McCaskie for putting us on the Chula Vista Thick-billed Kingbird. By 1:00 PM we were headed towards the Laguna Mountains. Climbing the Sunrise Hwy, we encountered a winter flock of W. Bluebirds, Oregon Juncos and two Lawrence’s Goldfinch. I’ve always had trouble finding these birds so this was exciting!
Tomorrow we try for the Bean Goose at the Salton Sea.
