We Arrive at Gambell-Sept 1, 2011

Well we made it to Gambell at 2:20 PM today albeit four hours late do to a low cloud ceiling.  Unfortunately, it became completely clear and sunny soon after our arrival which made for very pleasant weather but few birds.  The Little Bunting that had held for three days on the mountain slope was NOT here.  I did add two year-birds today. At least 1000 Short-tailed Shearwaters working at the sea watch and a smartly plumaged juvenile Red-throated Pipit which pose for all of us around 6:00 PM this evening with a warm sunlight behind us.

Our Wings group seems to have a good dynamic. There are eleven in the group plus the leaders Paul Lehman, Mark J. Billings and Dona Coates.  There are some strong independent birders here as well that I will comment on in due course.  Tomorrow will be our first full day. Stay tuned.
